This course is a critical exploration of the way risk is perceived, employed, and assessed in child sexual exploitation – and the way vulnerability is being understood in children of all ages.
For professionals who work with children thought to be ‘at risk’ of, or experiencing, child sexual exploitation, this course looks at the evidence for so-called ‘risk-taking behaviours’ and childhood vulnerabilities versus the evidence we have from wide empirical studies such as the ACE studies. What can we learn when we really put risk and vulnerability under the microscope and how can we support young people to take positive risks?
The main learning objectives of the course are as follows:
- To critique the language of ‘risk’ and ‘vulnerability’ in CSE
- To consider the use of the language and the concepts of risk and vulnerabilities as ‘leading to’ CSE
- To encourage a perception and language change in risk and vulnerability
- To ensure age-appropriate child behaviours and development are not problematised as risks or vulnerabilities
